OTTAWA -- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (SRM) has proposed to prohibit specified risk materials from use in animal feed, pet food and fertilizer in an effort to protect Canadian cattle from bovine spongiform encephalopathy. These amendments are in addition to the current feed ban established in 1997 prohibiting ruminate SRM from cattle feed.
Comments are requested from trading partners, regulated industries and the public. The deadline for submission is Feb. 24.
According to the CFIA, preventing SRM from entering the feed production chain enhances the existing feed ban by diminishing the effects of potential cross-contamination of animal feeds that could occur as feed is produced and distributed.
The provision prohibiting the use of SRM in fertilizers is intended to prevent the potential accidental or intentional misuse of fertilizers as feed.
