ATLANTA -- The egg industry's Animal Care Certified program has been named the best nationwide public relations program of the year by judges for the SABRE awards -- the Superior Achievement in Branding and Reputation awards.
Only one public relations campaign is selected for this honor each year, out of hundreds of campaigns. The campaigns are judged by senior public relations professionals from throughout the country and the award is presented by The Holmes Report, a public relations publication.
The Animal Care Certified campaign, developed by the United Egg Producers and its PR agency, GolinHarris, was undertaken to educate consumers about the production practices of ACC companies and is funded by those companies.
"We are proud of the Animal Care Certified program and deeply honored that the Holmes Group has recognized our efforts," said Gene Gregory, UEP senior vice president. "This is a very positive program and demonstrates to retailers and consumers our commitment to the welfare of our hens, and that we meet the highest standards of care."
The nationwide ACC program, launched by UEP in 2002, informs consumers that the eggs they purchase are produced on farms following strict guidelines for proper hen care. Cartons carrying the ACC logo have met 100 percent of the program guidelines as well as received independent inspections to ensure compliance.
The ACC guidelines, established by an independent scientific advisory committee for UEP, set rules for the welfare of hens, including housing and space allowance, air quality, feed and water, handling and transportation. Adherence to these guidelines is audited by independent inspectors, most of whom are USDA personnel.
The ACC guidelines and program are supported by USDA, the Food Marketing Institute and the National Council of Chain Restaurants.
