Company ordered to pay fines for contaminated chicken

The Associated Press

MADISON, Ill. -- A Madison, Ill.-based trucking and distribution company has to pay more than $270,000 for delivering contaminated chicken to an elementary school in Joliet, Ill.

More than 150 children and teachers at Laraway Elementary School suffered from vomiting, headaches and diarrhea.

U.S. Attorney Ron Tenpas says Lanter Co. illegally reboxed and repackaged chicken that was not properly inspected.

Earlier this year, the company pleaded guilty to transportation of poultry products that were misbranded and transportation of poultry products in commerce not properly inspected. A former operations manager also pleaded guilty in connection with the case.

About $175,000 from the fines and restitution payment will go to the Laraway school district. It will use the funds to provide updated textbooks.
