ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia's laying flocks produced 378 million eggs during February, up 2 percent from the number produced in February of last year, according to USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service Georgia Field Office.
February production included 200 million table eggs, down 2 percent from last year, and 178 million hatching eggs, up 7 percent from the previous year.
The average number of layers in all flocks, regardless of size, for February
was 19.4 million, down 2 percent from a year ago. The average number consisted of 9.51 million layers in table egg flocks 30,000 and above, and 9.83 million layers for hatching eggs. Eggs laid per 100 layers during February averaged 1,944, up 3 percent from the previous year. All layers on March 1 totaled 19.4 million, down 2 percent from March 1, 2007 inventory. The rate of lay per day during February 2008 averaged 67.0 eggs per 100 layers, down slightly from the previous year.
February hatch of broiler-type chicks, at 119 million, was up 3 percent from February of the previous year. Egg-type chicks hatched during February totaled 2.18 million, up 2 percent from a year ago.
