MTGA announces 2008-09 president, Executive Committee

BUFFALO, Minn. -- Kim Gorans, Gorans Brothers of Willmar, Minn., has been named president of the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association and Minnesota Turkey Research and Promotion Council for 2008-09.

"I am looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that the MTGA will face in the year to come," said Gorans after officially being handed the presidential gavel at the MTRPC-MTGA annual meeting.

Gorans raises turkeys with Gorans Brothers near Willmar. He is a second generation grower on the farm started by his father and two uncles in the 1940s. He came back full-time in 1977 after attending four years of college. Gorans Brothers presently consists of 20 family members plus additional employees. They raise 44 million pounds of further processed toms and also have 3,700 acres of corn and soybeans. In addition, they market and spread 30,000 tons of turkey manure over 7,000 acres, and manufacture 65,000 tons of feed per year for their own turkeys.

Gorans has been a member of the MTGA board since 1999. He is co-chairman of the Avian Pnuemovirus Task Force, and has been an industry representative on the Pneumo Tri-Lateral and Pneumo Eradication Committees. He also is active on the Research Funding Committee. He has been treasurer and council president at Svea Lutheran Church.

Gorans succeeds Gary Thurnau, a long-time employee with Jennie-O Turkey Store, Faribault, Minn., who now assumes the role of immediate past president.

Thurnau currently serves as Contract Procurement Coordinator for Jennie-O Turkey Store.

The remaining two members of the MTGA/MTRPC Executive Committee are Rahn Annis, Jennie-O Turkey Store, Willmar, Minn., vice president; and Kent Meschke, Meschke Poultry, Little Falls, Minn., treasurer.

Annis currently serves as vice president, Live Production for Jennie-O Turkey Store Co. He has spent 25 years in the turkey industry. He has served as an MTGA-MTRPC board director since 2001 and is also chairman of the MTRPC Research Funding Committee.

Meschke owns and operates Meschke Poultry, which produces around 700,000 light hens per year that are marketed through Jennie-O Turkey Store. The operation consists of brood and grow out facilities and a feed manufacturing facility in Little Falls. He is serving his second term on the MTGA-MTRPC board and is also a member of Jennie-O Turkey Store's Grower Council.
