Russia to accept poultry from 27 U.S. facilities

WASHINGTON -- Twenty-seven U.S. poultry facilities have received approval from Russia to again begin exporting chicken to that country.

USDA released a list on July 23 of processing plants and storage facilities that can ship chicken produced on or after July 14, 2010.

Russia earlier this year had banned chicken that had been processed with chlorinated water, a method generally used by U.S. processors. However, the U.S. and Russia recently reached an agreement that U.S. chicken going to Russia will not be treated with chlorine, but will use other approved treatments. Under the agreement, U.S. chicken companies can replace the chlorinated rinse with cetylpyridinium chloride, peroxyacetic acid or hydrogen peroxide.

The facilities approved by Russia are:

Pilgrim's Pride in Dallas, Texas, Boaz, Ala., and Russellville, Ala.; Tyson Foods Inc. in Green Forest, Ark., Cumming, Ga., Albertville, Ala., and Springdale, Ark.; OK Foods Inc. in Heavener, Okla., Muldrow, Okla., and Fort Smith, Ark.; Sanderson Farms Inc. in Laurel, Miss., Collins, Miss., and Hammond, La.; Simmons Foods Inc., Siloam Springs, Ark.; Zero Mountain Inc. in Fort Smith, Ark., Johnson, Ark., Lowell, Ark., and Russellville, Ark.; Gulf Coast Cold Storage, Pascagoula, Miss.; VersaCold, San Antonio, Texas; VersaCold USA Inc., Pendergrass, Ga.; Nordic Cold Storage, Hattiesburg, Miss.; Americold Logistics, Russellville, Ark.; Serv-Cold LLC, Troy, Ala.; Don's Cold Storage & Transportation, Rogers, Ark.; Eskimo Cold Storage, Gainesville, Ga.; and Jackson Cold Storage, Jackson, Miss.
